'Equilibrium'

Title:  'Equilibrium' Description:  This all-glass sculpture is cantilevered from the foyer wall at SmithKline Beecham. It measures 2.2m(W) x 3m(H) x 250mm(D). The toughened float glass structure is covered with a skin of acid etched antique glass.
Client:  SmithKline Beecham
Architect:  The Hillier Group
Location:  R&D Headquarters, Harlow, Essex, England.

The sculpture is divided into two competing sections. The first horizontal element shows imagery relating to the history of pharmaceuticals and medicine. These images were selected in collaboration with the client group. A second vertical element works as an asymetrical counterbalance in the composition. This structure of fractured and acid etched glass represents the anarchic forces at play in the world. Hovering away from the wall, this work embodies the precarious balancing act needed to acheive the equilibrium suggested in the title.
